Bubble gum

This painting is built in layers: a light green base, colorful round shapes arranged in a circle, and on top of it, a dark magenta X-shape pattern. The roundness carries through everywhere - in the little circles underneath, and in the way the whole composition refers to the shape of a bubble gum machine itself.

The story behind this painting

'Bubble gum' comes from a very vivid childhood memory - standing in front of a bubble gum machine, turning the handle, and waiting to see which color would drop out. You never knew which one you'd get, and it made the whole process unforgettable. This painting holds onto that same hope: all those colorful little shapes, waiting behind the glass.

The process

The X shapes here are more uniform than in my other pieces - similar in shape and color. What provides variety in this painting are the brushstrokes of round shapes in the background. Visible brushstrokes, differences in opacity, and overlapping shapes provide a three-dimensional background for the pattern.

Cross-stitching

The embroidery hoop, the bubble gum, and the machine are all round - this shape repeats throughout the painting. The pattern overlay gives the whole painting more depth. Cross-stitch-like pattern made of dark magenta x shapes refers to the Polish embroidery tradition.
