The story behind this painting
Mints - small candy with glossy semi-translucent shell that shimmers when light passes through it. I wanted to bring that same effect into this piece. When painting the thick three-dimensional X shapes I've mixed in other colors into the bright green base. From afar, the pattern seems to sparkle, like a mint candy shell.
The process
I used a sponge to build up the cloudy navy-purple background, layering colour until it felt soft and atmospheric. Each X shape is painted by hand using structural paste, so they sit raised off the canvas and catch real shadows. Into every X I worked small flecks of purple, red, and yellow for the shimmer effect.
Cross-stitching
This piece flips the contrast between the thread and the canvas. In traditional embroidery the canvas is light and the thread is colorful. Here, light green X shapes pop out of dark navy purple canvas. Cross-stitching is a technique my grandma taught me growing up, now I use the same X shapes, the same rhythm of thread crossing thread, just scaled up and reimagined in paint.
