The story behind this painting
Cotton candy is the definition of lightness - it dissolves the moment it touches your tongue. I wanted to mirror this feeling in the background of this piece: soft and cloud-like, shifting between purplish and pinkish tones. The pink palette came naturally from the cotton candy, pulled between quinacridone magenta and a cooler purple.
The process
I painted each X shape by hand. No two are quite the same. The base is a deep magenta, but into each shape I also worked a very light pink shimmer - just enough to make the pattern feel airy, almost disappearing into the background. I used structural paste to make the X shapes three-dimensional. They stick out from the canvas, casting very delicate shadows.
Cross-stitching
Cross-stitching is one of the oldest and most meditative forms of embroidery. That regularity, that quiet repetitiveness, is what draws me to it. The canvas is round, just like an embroidery hoop. It felt right to carry this shape through from the technique that started it all.
