Fade

Inspired by that phase of a sunset when the sun has just started to dip, but before the sky has fully changed, when everything fades into a soft purplish haze. The X shapes are a light purple with an orange shimmer worked through them - the color of the sun still visible in the sky. The orange is pronounced enough to catch the eye even from a distance.

Not quite a sunset yet

There's a moment before a sunset properly happens where nothing is settled yet - the light is neither daytime nor evening, just caught between the two. I find myself drawn to painting these in-between states more than the dramatic ones. 'Fade' holds onto that pause, right before the purple takes over completely.

The process

I used modeling paste to build up the surface, making each X three-dimensional and physically present. Each one is unique - some thicker, some thinner, each with its own mix of colours. From a distance they read as similar, closed and built up in the same way, but every difference emerges the closer you look.

Unconventional cross-stitching symmetry

The X shapes in this painting come from cross-stitching, a technique I was obsessed with as a child. The pattern itself breaks from convention - most cross-stitch designs are symmetrical left to right or top to bottom, but this one is symmetrical diagonally instead - the same pattern I return to, at a larger scale, in 'Purple Sunset'.
