Shimmer

The Day Before Spring (Sunrise)

Inspired by that particular kind of morning - you wake up and something has shifted, the light looks different, and you can sense spring is close. Like all my work, it's built from cross-stitching: soft orange X shapes sit against a sponged, golden-orange background, so the two almost blend. It's the orange shimmer worked through each X that catches the light and makes them glow from within.

Winter loosening its grip

There's a particular morning every year when something shifts before you can name it - the air smells different, and you just know spring is close. This painting holds that feeling: the warmth of a first step outside, when winter has started to loosen its grip, even if the season hasn't officially turned yet.

Built up, shape by shape

Each X is hand-painted and built up with modelling paste, giving the surface real texture rather than a flat pattern. That texture is what catches the light as you move past the painting, so it never looks quite the same from one angle to the next.

Anticipation, hidden in plain sight

Cross-stitching inspires this painting too, like all my work - but here the pattern hides more than it reveals. The X shapes and background are close in colour, so at first the pattern almost disappears into the golden orange. It's only the shimmer, catching light as you move past, that gives away the energy underneath - the same anticipation you feel on a morning when spring is close, but hasn't quite arrived.
