This painting captures an early spring evening - the light softening into pink, purple, and orange. Like all my work, it's inspired by cross-stitching - every X is hand-painted and unique. Bright orange reflections are woven through the purple and pink X shapes, just like the sun breaking through the evening sky. The pattern builds slowly, one shape at a time, until the whole sunset appears.

An early spring sky

There's a particular quality to sunsets in early spring - the air is still sharp, but the sky has started to soften earlier again, holding onto colour for longer than it did in winter. This painting expresses that shift: the light stretching out, warmer and slower than it's been in months.

One X at a time

There's something meditative about painting the same shape over and over - the repetition empties my mind. For this piece, I mixed pink and purple in different proportions for each X, adding a light orange shimmer into almost every one. From a distance, they all look similar, but up close, all those small differences emerge - each X built with its own shape and texture.

A whimsical kind of texture art

Cross-stitching inspires almost everything I make. I've used the same diagonally symmetrical pattern from 'Fade'. Here it's expanded to a larger scale. It changes the feeling to something more whimsical. The pattern catches the light differently every time you walk past it, so it never sits quite still on the wall.
