The story behind this painting

I painted Snowlight after the first clear morning in a long time - snow still everywhere, but the sun sitting a little higher in the sky, the light warmer than it had been in weeks. Still deep winter, but it almost felt like spring. I made it on one of those quiet, cosy studio days when time disappears and it's just you and the painting - my favourite kind of day.

The process

All the X shapes are built using structural paste, giving them a real, three-dimensional presence on the canvas. Into each one I worked a bit of pink-red, in different amounts and with different brush gestures, so no two are quite the same. It's one of those pieces that turned out better than I imagined - some paintings just land the way you hoped this one would.

Cross-stitching

Snowlight leans into the unevenness of hand-stitching. Some X shapes sit almost flat against the canvas, others build up higher, and through a few of them, you can still see the canvas. It's the technique my grandma taught me growing up, translated into paint.
