Orange X shapes sit against a yellow background, each one woven through with a light shimmer that catches differently as the light moves, so the surface seems to glow from within. Some X shapes hold more orange, some more yellow, built up one at a time with modeling paste for texture.

After months of pale light

There's a moment in late winter when you step outside and feel the shift before you can explain it - sunsets that suddenly feel warmer, richer, after months of pale winter light. This painting holds that feeling: colour that's stronger and more saturated than the (Sunrise) piece, the way everything seems to vibrate a little more once the light starts to turn.

Paint one, and it's just a mark

I built this pattern the same way I build all my X-shape paintings - one hand-painted shape at a time, using modeling paste for texture. Paint one, and it's just a mark. Paint a hundred, and the pattern slowly emerges, shape by shape. Some X shapes hold more orange, some more yellow, each one catching the shimmer differently as the light moves across it.

A bold stitch

Cross-stitching sits behind this piece too, like all my work - but here it reads more clearly. In traditional cross-stitch, the boldest pieces are the ones where the thread stands out sharply against the fabric instead of blending into it. That's the feeling I wanted here: the orange X shapes stand clearly apart from the yellow background, the way a strong stitch stands out against pale fabric.
