The palette is limited - a pinkish cream background and X shapes just a shade lighter, with barely any contrast between them. A little of the same red shimmer I used in Snowlight is worked into the X shapes.

What inspired me

'Snowdusk' captures that moment just before sunset on a winter day, when the bright, almost blinding daylight turns softer and warmer. I wanted to hold onto that quiet shift in colour - the pink glow that settles over everything for just a few minutes before the sun sets for the day.

The texture

The background is pinkish cream, built up with a sponge until the colour felt soft and even. Each X shape sits just a shade lighter, raised off the canvas using structural paste. It's the texture, catching the light, that makes the pattern stand out rather than colour.

Childhood love for cross-stitching

Cross-stitching has been an inspiration for this piece, and for many of my paintings. It's a technique where you build whole patterns, even full images, out of crosses made of colourful thread. Every summer break growing up, I travelled to the coast with my grandma. While the other kids were playing volleyball or swimming in the sea, I'd sit on the beach cross-stitching new pieces. That old love for the X shape has stayed with me ever since.
